Out My Window

I happen to be lucky to live in south Florida

The view is always grand
where I stand.
There are canals
of blue
filled with fish, birds, too.

The sky is mostly blue
reflected on the water.
but it can get pretty hot
as it aught.

We are closer to the Equator here
so the weather can get severe
with hurricanes and strong winds,
in Spring it begins.

So many animals abound
you can imagine the sounds
of the morning.

We have burrowing owls
always inquisitive.
There are usually two
where they live
in a burrow underground.

They can hear you coming
if you are too close.
They will pop their little head up
and ask what do you propose?

We have iguana.
If you wanna
you can never see them up close
as they run
or stand in their frozen
pose.

Cormorants visit
dry their wings
and eat the fish
all year through.

Muscovy ducks and others appear
with their babies in the rear,
following their mom to the lake
to paddle and swim right out of the egg.

Woodpeckers
come around.
some try to make holes
in the awnings.
Loud, so loud.

Bluejays fight for peanuts
while I feed the squirrels.
So fast and beautiful.
Their feathers just unfurl
and they are off again.
So fast!

Squirrels always look so anxious.
They watch to make sure it’s safe
and then sneak up but don’t get to close
in case there is a chafe, usually
bluejays.

You can’t move too quickly when they get up close.
They will take off like they have had a dose
of adrenaline.
“Too close, too close.”
and off they go to return again another day.

So you see I am lucky
and I’m not being plucky.
I have lived up north
and it’s too cold most of the year,
and that was only Georgia.
